This acclaimed off-Broadway institution champions new American plays and bold reinterpretations of classics in intimate theater spaces that blur the line between performer and audience. Signature Theatre

So many legendary plays and musicals have come through the non-profit theaters of our city, and we’re fortunate to have a few of them right in our neighborhood. No matter when you’re looking, there is something exciting happening at one, if not all three of these venues. Stepping away from the bright, commercial lights of Broadway is cleansing for the theatrical soul, and there is so much great work happening here, and throughout our amazing city.

On the second floor there is a quiet and comfortable public space with a coffee shop and cafe where I like to hang out and do some work. I love its serene atmosphere and the fact that it’s not widely known — a hidden gem.

They’re doing it right over there and I wish there were more theaters like this everywhere. They have multiple spaces but what’s particularly great is the bar/cafe they have that’s open even when there aren’t shows running. They’ve made a space where anyone is welcome any time of day. It’s a great way to bring the public in and to develop future audiences.

I love the community element of the lobby. Of course, the theatre spaces and shows are top notch and that makes me incredibly happy — but the idea of having a local space to land makes it different from all the others. Jim Houghton truly had a dream fulfilled. Miss him too.

Signature Theatre also stages amazing, original productions — and their lobby/coffee bar area is my favorite spot for one-on-one meetings. I also do a lot of writing there.

My home away from home is the Signature Center. Yes, this is because so many of our shows from The New Group go up there, but it’s also because of the amazing cafe. The bar manager, Miranda, is one of the sweetest humans ever and she whips up the best pre-show drinks.

I’ve written so many shows in the Signature Theatre lobby. Whenever I want to get out of my house, I get my laptop, get on their wi-fi, order up a little something from the cafe, and it’s lovely.

I actually prefer Off-Broadway to Broadway. It’s more experimental and interesting. And the three theater companies on this block of W42nd Street — Theatre Row, Playwrights Horizons, and Signature Theatre — are all excellent and conveniently located.
