HK Community Cupboard

One of my favorite parts of helping out at the food cupboard is when my friend Eve and I find a mini-sized fruit in one of the bags and then wait to give it to a child on the food line who is proportionately mini. Something about the perfect match of hand-littleness and fruit-littleness melts my heart every time.

When you go there — and I suggest everyone should go and volunteer for just one day, to really see what Hell’s Kitchen is really all about — you will see the very best of humanity and people devoting their time to caring and helping their Hell’s Kitchen neighbors.

What makes me happy about it is that it shows the love and care we can give to a complete stranger. Unselfish love for others. Taking the time to make food and leave in the cupboard for someone hungry is the beautiful, selfless act of kindness you can do. Makes me proud to be in this neighborhood.

I’m very appreciative of this mutual aid effort, where I can drop off leftover food items for anyone to share and enjoy. The cupboard volunteers are rock star neighbors who do weekly food rescuers at local cafes and restaurants. There is also a monthly grocery bagging event that is a great way to volunteer and meet new friends.
